Takahee were thought to be instinct. Dr Geoff Orbell is noted for the rediscovery in 1948 on the Murchison Mountains on the west side of Lake Te Anau. My thinking is, perhaps they were hoping to be left alone? I have had the privilege of observing them on Tiritrimatangi, which was very special. They are very reminiscent of prehistoric life….
