E whakaaro ana au i ēnei mea - I dip in and out of feeling mamae, whakamā, matekiri, rarurau, hōhā with myself about my lack of knowledge and understanding of Te Ao Māori, engari, e waimarie an au! He aha ai? Nō te mea: • I have many positive role models in my life whom have taken the lead and live, celebrate and promote our precious culture and the taonga o te reo, ngā wā katoa! • Ringa toi tōku mahi! Stoked that I am an artist. This has helped connect me to who I am and meet other amazing ringa toi māori. • That my āku tama are growing up in Aotearoa with such strong advocates for all things māori. The future impact of this will bring unity, equity and community to Aotearoa. • That summer is coming and I can enjoy it at home, ki Tūtūkākā, ki Te Tai Tokerau where so many wāhi are kupu māori! Tētahi kupu, which is almost totally entrenched in kiwi culture and one I use without doubt, several times a day (which I think many of us do), is KIA ORA. I pīrangi au ki whakanui ko te kupu 'kia ora' ki konei, i tēnei mahi toi. This piece to me is simply 'Hello', 'Thank you', 'I acknowlegde you', 'Be well', 'I appreciate you' - this is how I use one kupu māori every day. On close view you will see the intricate 'native aotearoa' pattern - it holds a much more deep and involved relationship with what it means to be me, māori and a kiwi. It's a simple way to connect us, show respect, acknowledge and support Te Tiriti and the principles. Very simple but a powerful statement - no matter how much reo māori you have.
